Amberen Review

Amberen

Each day, hundreds of women turn to Amberen for menopausal relief but it’s also becoming popular for people who want to lose weight.

This unique formula is “clinically proven to relieve most menopausal symptoms,” including hot flashes, weight gain, sleeplessness, irritability, and low libido – or so advertisements claim.

Yet is Amberen a good choice to slim down? Or is this supplement best left on the shelf if weight loss is your goal?

Understanding Ammonium Succinate

Amberen gets its name from the lead ingredient: ammonium succinate, formerly known as amber acid or the spirit of amber.

Succinate is a white, odorless compound that forms during the krebs cycle (an aerobic cycle that produces energy). It is primarily used as a sweetener in the food and beverage industry, but studies suggest it plays a key role in maintaining a healthy immune system and metabolism.

The ingredient has been studied since 1971 as a potential menopausal treatment, and there are numerous studies validating its effectiveness. Amberen.com even provides consumers with helpful references to human clinical trials and peer-reviewed publications.

I was particularly interested in the peer-reviewed publications, as these studies lend the most credibility to Amberen.

2005 Study: In this study[1], Russian researchers analyzed Enerlit-Clima, a bioactive succinate-based food additive (not Amberen). 70 women were divided into two groups: those who received 2 EC capsules twice daily and those who received a placebo. Although not a lot of information is available, after 3 weeks, women who received EC “improved significantly after a course of treatment. The patients noted alleviation of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and irritability.” [2]

Long-term effects and weight loss results were unobserved.

2007 Study: Also conducted by Russian researchers, this study examines the effects of Amberen on both aging mice and women.

After 4 weeks, mice who received a succinate-based food composition experienced a “restoration of the estral cycle and an increase in the weight and calcium content of bone tissue.

The results were promising, so the study then progressed to human trials. In the randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study in menopausal women, Amberen-based monotherapy significantly lowered most subjectively evaluated characteristics of menopausal syndrome.” These symptoms included hot flushes, headache, and anxiety. [3]

I found this study particularly interesting because it involved both mice and women. The human study involved 70 women, 50 of which were given Amberen for 21 days.

2008 Study: Why Amberen.com features this study[4] confuses me. Although the 2007 and 2008 studies were published in separate journals during different time periods, I believe the two studies are the same. The conclusions were exactly alike – word for word.

While I was initially impressed with the inclusion of these studies on the website, I have to admit these studies aren’t enough to convince me Amberen is a good product.

These studies were conducted on mice, and the main ingredient was a succinate-based compound, which may or may not have been Amberen. Furthermore, the studies do not give details about long-term side effects or precise ingredient concentrations used to create the results.

Although the research is promising, I couldn’t be certain ammonium succinate alone was enough to promote weight loss or even treat menopausal symptoms.

Consequently, I took a closer look at the rest of Amberen’s formula.

Additional Ingredients

In addition to ammonium succinate, Amberen contains the following:

Calcium Disuccinate. Easy to digest, this calcium strengthens bones and reduces osteoporosis risk. Doctors recommend 1000 mg to 1200 mg calcium to treat menopausal symptoms.

Monosodium L-Glutamate. A glutamine salt, this compound stabilizes chemical reactions to improve immunity, promote muscle growth, and enhance digestion.

Glycine. This naturally produced amino acid plays a key role in protein production. It may improve memory and decrease anxiety but further research is needed.

Magnesium Dissucinate Hydrate. Easier to absorb than ordinary magnesium, this magnesium compound alleviates menopausal symptoms, including migraine frequency and severity. Experts recommend 310 mg to 320 mg of magnesium daily for adult women.

Tocopherol Acetate. A natural form of vitamin E, tocopherol acetate acts as an antioxidant. It eliminates free radicals from the body, lengthening cell lifespan.

Do These Ingredients Target Belly Fat?

Amberen is widely known for its radio and television commercials claiming to target belly fat and promote weight loss.

Amberen.com goes so far as to state, “Amberen is clinically shown to promote weight loss during menopause or perimenopause.”

Supposedly, “In a double blind, placebo controlled clinical study, women who received Amberen showed consistent and statistically significant weight loss without significant changes in their lifestyle.”

However, manufacturers do not reference which particular study achieved these results. Furthermore, manufacturers contradict themselves on their FAQ page: “Weight loss was not clinically evaluated by test administrators during the Amberen clinical trials.”

As far as I can tell, the individual ingredients do not promote weight loss in any way. Though Amberen may counteract menopausal symptoms and possibly stabilize weight fluctuations, I doubt it’s the miracle fat-burner most dieters are looking for.

Does it Help Women with Hysterectomy or Oophorectomy?

These two surgeries can wreak havoc on women’s hormones, resulting in symptoms similar to menopause.

Consequently, many women wonder if Amberen can counteract these effects.

According to Amberen.com, “Amberen provides relief from menopausal symptoms primarily at the hypothalamic level, providing benefits that are broader and wider-ranging than just ovarian stimulation. Patients with hysterectomies and/or oophorectomies were not represented in our clinical studies. Most available data on Amberen’s effectiveness for hysterectomy and oophorectomy cases was obtained from the observation and analysis of cases by our scientists over a long period of time outside the framework of the clinical trials.”

Is Amberen Safe?

Proprietary blends usually send up a red flag in my book. After all, most diet pills and supplements contain stimulating or unproven ingredients that could have a negative impact on your health.

However, Amberen’s formula is little more than a mix of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids. Many of the ingredients are actually recommended by the dietary association.

Although side effects will vary between individuals, I anticipate that they will be mild. In some cases, women report an increase in hot flashes – but after adjusting the dosage, these side effects tend to disappear.

Women should keep in mind that Amberen may affect the menstrual cycle. This is normal.

Manufacturers explain, “It is not uncommon to have your menstrual cycle return if you are still in peri-menopause and have irregular cycles. In fact, you should embrace it as a sign of rejuvenation. . . As Amberen begins to regulate your hormones it will also regulate your cycle if you are still biologically capable of maintaining your reproductive abilities. However, if you are in post-menopause and have not had a cycle for 12 consecutive months and notice bleeding or spotting, then it is highly recommended that you speak to your doctor about post-menopausal bleeding. Approximately 20-30% of women experience post-menopausal bleeding as a result of the use of different or new HRT, nutrient deficiencies, extreme stress, drastic weight loss, hormonal imbalance or emotional trauma.”

Recommended Usage

Amberen contains a self-assessment test to help women determine the proper dosage. Depending on symptom severity, women can choose Course A (2 capsules a day) or Course B (4 capsules per day).
Manufacturers recommend taking Amberen for the full 90 days to experience the best benefits.

Additionally, following a healthy diet and exercise program will enhance overall results.

Pricing Options

Amberen is available through various online sellers. My favorite sites include:

• Amazon.com: $43.43
• eBay.com: $21.49
• Buy.com: $49.99

Additionally, Amberen is sold in two different pricing packages at Amberen.com. The first package consists of a 30 day supply for $49.99. It is not backed with a guarantee. The second package consists of a 90 day supply for $99.98. As an extra bonus, this second package also includes a weight loss guide, a diet menu, and a professional consultation. What if Amberen Doesn’t Work?

Your hormones are unique. Consequently, you may respond differently to Amberen’s ingredients.

Fortunately, Amberen.com offers a 30 day money-back guarantee when you order their 90-day supply package. To receive a refund, you must return your two unopened, shrink-wrapped Amberen bottles within 30 days of the purchase date (not the day you receive your package).

To contact customer support about your order, you can call 800-222-3304 or try the live chat service available on their site.

More About the Manufacturers

I have to admit, I’m pretty impressed with Lunada Biomedical, Amberen’s manufacturers. The site is BBB (Better Business Bureau) accredited, and Amberen.com shares BBB’s stamp of approval with the statement:

“BBB has determined that this business meets BBB accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints. BBB Accredited Businesses pay a fee for accreditation review/monitoring and for support of BBB services to the public.”

On the BBB’s A to F rating scale, Lunada scores an impressive A-. The company deals with consumer complaints in a prompt and professional matter.

Even though the National Advertising Division (NAD) challenged Lunada Biomedical for making false advertisements on its website, Lunada Biomedical took the “necessary and appropriate steps” to discontinue these claims and ensure consumers weren’t misled. [5]

Pick it or Pitch it?

If you’re looking for menopausal relief, then Amberen seems like a good option. It comes highly recommended by consumers and experts alike.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a fast-acting diet pill to help you lose a few extra pounds, then I suggest you look elsewhere. Amberen is designed primarily for menopause, not weight loss.

Joan, Amberen may help, but hormones are hard to predict, especially if you’re taking a great deal of medication and nothing is working. We’ can’t really predict whether this will help you since everyone responds differently to the product.
