Can’t Lose Weight? It Might Be Out of Your Control
Diet experts and nutritionists make it seem that losing weight is simply a matter of calories in vs. calories out.
If you faithfully keep track of how many calories you eat in a day vs. the amount of calories you burn during exercise, you will not only lose weight but keep it off – it’s basic math.
However, there could be other factors that could be interfering with your weight loss equation, turning a simple add and subtract formula for weight loss into a complex conundrum of plateaus and frustration.
If your bathroom scale is refusing to budge, then one of these problems could be the reason why you can’t lose weight.
You’re Feeling Blue
In a study published by the American Journal of Public Health, individuals who frequently feel depressed, sad, or lonely were more likely to gain weight.
Belinda Needham, PhD, explains, “They may be eating more high-fat, high-calorie comfort foods, or they may have cut back their physical their physical activity.”
Additionally, anti-depressant medication may cause a gradual accumulation of weight gain over the years, as much as 5-15 pounds.
While increasing physical activity can increase the release of endorphins (helping to improve your mood), you may want to ask your doctor to adjust your medication.
You Could Have a Deficiency
Mineral deficiencies can have a huge impact on your energy levels, your metabolism, and consequently, your ability to lose weight.
For example, if you’re low on calcium, you could experience numbness and muscle aches which makes it difficult to finish a workout, or you could experience a constant craving for salty snacks which could make it harder for you to maintain a healthy low-calorie diet (salt temporarily increase calcium levels in the blood stream, tricking the brain into thinking it’s solved the problem).
On the other hand, you could be low in magnesium, which results in weakness and dizziness, and can sap your energy levels. Or perhaps you could be low in Selenium which can impair thyroid and cardiac function.
You should be very careful with your vitamin and mineral intake. Too much or too little of any vitamin or mineral can make it difficult to lose weight and lead to more severe medical problems. Double-check with your doctor that your diet is providing you with the nutrients you need to stay healthy.
You’re Not Regular
Constipation and irregular bowel movements could be the reason you’re packing on the extra pounds.
Dr. Hedaya, Founder of the National Center for Whole Psychiatry, points out, “Ideally, you eat, and then, an hour or so later, you have a bowel movement, but once or twice a day is still in the healthy range.”
