Food Addictions

Anything can be addictive. If it gives you pleasure or a high or anything really, it can be addictive. So let’s call it like it is. You can be addicted to food like anything else, and anything in excess can be harmful to the body. Now some are more immediately deadly than others such as drug addictions. And ironically some see the dangers of one addiction such as illegal drugs and not of others like smoking. The difference between food addictions and other addictions is that you cannot actually go without food.

Food addictions are also easier to cover up. I’ve never personally had anything I would consider an addiction in my life. Things hold an appeal to me as long as I’m having a good time with them or enjoying them. But if I think they’re harmful or I’m just bored of them, they no longer hold any physical or other appeal to me. On the other hand just because I haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean I don’t have sympathy for those that do suffer through those problems. I certainly do. They can be a detriment to their lives in general and produce a number of different problems to be sure.

The problem with food addictions is that those people don’t eat to live, they live to eat, and they literally cannot stay away from it, etc. You have to eat to live. So I can understand how it could be harder. Now if you are addicted to foods like fruits and vegetables as long as you are not eating so much as to harm yourself, it’s fine. But I’ve never personally heard of anybody with that kind of luck. The biggest problem is that food addictions are hard to recognize even in ourselves. They could be cravings or more obvious, but it’s hard to see at times.
