Met-RX Meal Replacement Review
Whether you’re looking to bulk up muscle with protein or decrease your daily calorie count, a meal replacement shake can be a useful part of your routine. Supplement company Met-RX hopes you’ll pick its Meal Replacement as your shake of choice.
According to advertisements, Met-RX Meal Replacement is a protein-based meal replacement shake meant to build muscle. Using the power of whey protein, this product is a low-fat, low-carb approach to muscle growth and definition.
Along with protein, Met-RX Meal Replacement features 25 essential vitamins and minerals to support all-around health.
Is Met-RX Meal Replacement anything more than just a good protein source? Can it actually deliver measurable muscle growth?
I intend to find out.
Who Is Met-RX?
Knowing more about a manufacturer means I’m better able to judge the quality of their product. In this case, the manufacturer is Met-RX.
Met-RX is a supplement company based in California. According to their website, Met-RX was originally created by a Dr. Scott Connelly to prevent critically ill patients from losing muscle mass. Connelly has since sold the company to Rexall Sundown.
While Met-RX has gained a lot of exposure as the sponsor of the World’s Strongest Man competition, it isn’t without its problems. In October 1996, the company was featured on an NBC DateLine segment called “Hype in a Bottle.” The segment reported that Met-RX did not provide peer-reviewed documentation that supported its advertising claims.
The Cooper Clinic, a group based in Dallas, Texas, was also implicated when Met-RX falsely claimed that several Dallas Cowboys gained between 2 and 3 pounds of lean body mass per week while using Met-RX products.
Met-RX has also been discussed in several issues of The National Council Against Health Fraud’s newsletter. The NCAHF points out that claims made by Met-RX are based on celebrity endorsement, not scientific studies. Such claims lead potential customers astray.
I couldn’t find anything amiss with Met-RX’s actual business practices, but it seems their marketing campaign has serious issues. Knowing this, take anything you hear about or from Met-RX with a grain of salt.
What Ingredients Are in Met-RX Meal Replacement?
The Met-RX Meal Replacement formula is large, complicated, and full to the brim. There are more than 40 ingredients in this 72-gram formula, all of which are included in a proprietary blend. This means we don’t know how much of each ingredient is included in Met-RX Meal Replacement. However, considering the per-serving size, it’s safe to assume it’s a lot.
You can find the full list on BodyBuilding.com/met-rex/meal-replacement. For now, I’ll highlight the individual ingredients in the Metamyosyn protein blend, as these ingredients are most heavily advertised by Met-RX.
Milk Protein Concentrate
Milk protein benefits both from whey protein and casein. Both are considered high-quality protein sources. While whey digests quickly, casein releases slowly, which allows your muscles continuous access to protein. Milk protein also burns fat. In a 6-month study, researchers at the University of Tennessee found that overweight people who took 3 servings of calcium-rich dairy daily lost more belly fat than those who didn’t consume as much dairy .
Calcium caseinate is found in milk protein, but is included here separately. In addition to building muscle, casein helps bodybuilders prevent catabolism, or the breakdown of muscle proteins. Casein also slows digestion, which prolongs feeling of fullness.
An amino acid that supports muscle recovery, glutamine supports the “after” effects of Met-RX Meal Replacement. And, as a building block of muscle, glutamine has a hand in muscle creation as well. Amino acids support protein synthesis, which leads to lean muscle growth.
Whey Protein Concentrate
Whey protein is considered one of the most effective protein forms available. Made from proteins isolated from whey, whey protein contains several branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), are essential for muscle growth and development BCAAs also stimulate insulin production, which means muscle cells can use circulating blood sugar as an energy force. However, whey protein is also associated with side effects like gas, bloating, and flatulence. This may make you uncomfortable.
Egg whites are another great protein source. Along with high-quality protein, egg whites contain all the amino acids necessary for body and muscle maintenance. With both protein and supporting amino acids, egg whites are a great way to bulk up muscle.
There are some high-quality protein forms in Met-RX Meal Replacement. Judging by the remaining ingredients, I’d say this blend is the source of most of Met-RX Meal Replacement’s power.
However, the proprietary blend makes it difficult to say whether this blend is included in the correct amount. To judge effectiveness, I’ll have to turn to Met-RX Meal Replacement customer reviews instead.
What Do Customers Think of Met-RX Meal Replacement?
Customers seem to like Met-RX Meal Replacement, which leads me to assume the blend is included in the proper amounts. Met-RX Meal Replacement currently holds a 9/10-star rating on BodyBuilding.com and 4/5-star rating on Amazon.com.
Here’s a look at what customers thought of this product.
“Really can’t write too long of a review but I have to say this works as everyone here states. It is great as a meal replacement and makes it convenient for those days where you are running late and you can grab your shaker bottle and pouch. It has a great taste. I do recommend it with a shaker bottle as it can be quite difficult to mix by just stirring. So definitely take this one shaken, not stirred.” –Steve
“This product is amazing and has helped me to lose some weight without losing too much muscle. There is a great blend of carbohydrates and proteins to leave you feeling full and energized. This product is also full of vitamins and minerals! You really cannot beat the price either, as it is one of the cheapest Meal Replacements on the market.”—Christopher J. Dickson
“Used Met Rx on prior occasions to lose weight and it works. Used a a meal replacement it leaves you satisfied if not full. One of the best things is no hunger pangs. Don’t hesitate to use it.”—Scott G.
Judging by these reviews, Meal Replacement is equally effective as a muscle builder and as a weight loss aid. The flavors seem to be popular, too, which is always a good sign.
How Do I Order Met-RX Meal Replacement?
If Met-RX Meal Replacement sounds like the product for you, you have a few different options when it comes to purchasing. The product doesn’t retail on the official Met-RX website, but it is available in stores like The Vitamin Shoppe and Wal-Mart. The price generally hovers between $30 and $60.
Other online vendors include:
This isn’t a bad price for a meal replacement with such positive reviews. If you do some comparison shopping, you’re sure to find a good deal.
Is Met-RX Meal Replacement Worth Trying?
Met-RX Meal Replacement has a solid formula, positive customer reviews, and a decent price. If you aren’t allergic to dairy or other allergens the formula, this product could be worth a try.
